About SSCC-18 Barcodes
The SSCC-18 barcode (Serial Shipping Container Code) is the standard logistics identifier used to track individual shipping units, pallets, and shipping containers throughout the global supply chain. Unlike product barcodes that identify a product type (such as EAN-13), the SSCC-18 represents a unique license plate for a specific transport carton, allowing logistics companies to track the unit's exact location and shipment details.
How SSCC-18 Encoding Works
SSCC-18 encodes exactly 18 digits, prefixed by the (00) Application Identifier. The 18-digit code consists of an extension digit (used to increase the numbering capacity), the GS1 manufacturer prefix, a serial reference number assigned by the shipper, and a final check digit at position 18. It is typically printed on a GS1-128 shipping label, which provides a standard layout for logistics networks.
Common Applications and Industries
SSCC-18 is used by freight carriers, distributors, manufacturers, and retailers on outer transport containers. When a pallet arrives at a distribution center, warehouse operators scan the SSCC-18 barcode. This code query links to electronic shipping notices (ASNs) in the cloud, instantly updating the inventory system with details on the pallet's exact contents, order number, and origin.
Advantages & Limitations
SSCC-18 provides a globally unique identifier for transport units, enabling automated shipping tracking and pallet receiving without opening the boxes. It is standard across all major shipping carriers and retail supply chains. The limitation is that it is numeric-only and serves purely as a database key, containing no product or address details natively.
