About ITF-14 Barcodes

ITF-14 is a specific implementation of the Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode, standardized by GS1 to identify trade items in the global supply chain. It encodes a 14-digit Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-14) which specifies shipping cases, outer cartons, and wholesale pallets. Unlike retail barcodes that must be printed with high precision, ITF-14 is designed with thick bars and a heavy black border called "bearer bars" to ensure it can be printed directly onto cardboard and scanned in harsh warehouse environments.

How ITF-14 Encoding Works

ITF-14 encodes exactly 14 numeric digits: the first digit is the packaging indicator (0-8), followed by a 2-3 digit GS1 country prefix, a manufacturer code, an item reference number, and a final modulo-10 checksum at the 14th position. It is enclosed by thick black bearer bars on the top and bottom (or all four sides). These bearer bars equalize the pressure of the printing plate and prevent the barcode scanner from misreading the code if the scanner beam enters from the side.

Common Applications and Industries

ITF-14 is used exclusively on non-retail shipping cartons, corrugated cases, and pallet boxes. When warehouse staff receive shipments, they scan the ITF-14 to instantly register the product type and package quantity in their database. It is not intended for consumer retail checkouts, where EAN-13 or UPC-A are used on the individual product packaging.

Advantages & Limitations

ITF-14 is exceptionally durable and prints clearly on corrugated cardboard without smudging. The thick bearer bars prevent scanner misreads and partial scans, making warehouse operations extremely efficient. The limitation of ITF-14 is that it is strictly numeric, fixed-length (14 digits), and too large and coarse for individual retail items or small consumer packages.
