About Micro PDF417 Barcodes
Micro PDF417 is a compact, space-saving variant of the standard PDF417 stacked 2D barcode. It is designed for applications where package space is limited but the data density of a 2D stacked barcode is still required. By streamlining the start and stop guard patterns and reducing row overhead, Micro PDF417 enables the storage of moderate text strings in a narrow vertical strip.
How Micro PDF417 Encoding Works
Micro PDF417 reduces the width of standard PDF417 by replacing the wide start and stop patterns with narrow, shared vertical column configurations. It supports a fixed set of column layouts (1 to 4 columns) and can stack up to 44 rows. It encodes up to 250 alphanumeric characters or 366 numeric digits, utilizing built-in Reed-Solomon error correction to defend against print defects and scanning angles.
Common Applications and Industries
Micro PDF417 is used in retail logistics for inventory labeling of small products, pharmaceutical packaging, and electronic component tracking. It is also used on shipping labels alongside linear barcodes (composite codes) to provide supplementary batch and serial numbers. It is scanned by modern imaging scanners and warehouse sorting cameras.
Advantages & Limitations
It provides a highly compact stacked barcode option, fitting onto narrow package edges. It maintains the offline data benefits of PDF417 in a smaller footprint. The limitation is its lower maximum data capacity compared to standard PDF417, and it is less common than square matrix codes like Data Matrix, which offer superior density.
